Is the Black Sea safe to swim in? Varna flags, currents, jellyfish

Yes, in season and on guarded beaches: Varna's water tests excellent. The real risks are currents and swell; local jellyfish give only mild stings.

Published:

Yes, the Black Sea off Varna is generally safe to swim in during the summer season, as long as you use a lifeguarded beach and follow the flags. The water is clean: in June 2026, 21 of the 23 bathing zones tested by the Regional Health Inspectorate (RZI) Varna were rated excellent. The real dangers are currents and swell, not jellyfish or sharks.

What do the beach flags mean?

On guarded beaches, lifeguards raise a flag on or near their tower. The Bulgarian Red Cross explains the colours like this:

Flag Meaning
Green Swimming allowed
Yellow Swimming allowed with extra care; no inflatables or floating objects
Red Swimming prohibited

A red-and-yellow flag marks the guarded zone, and a raised flag means a lifeguard is on duty. GOV.UK and Germany’s Foreign Office both tell visitors to follow lifeguards’ instructions and warning signs. Under a red flag, lifeguards will call you out of the water. Don’t treat an empty tower as a green light.

What is “martvo valnenie” (dead swell), and how do I escape a current?

Bulgarians call the long, rolling waves that arrive after a storm far out at sea martvo valnenie (“dead swell”). They can come on a sunny, windless day. They break hard on the shore and pull water back out. Germany’s Foreign Office warns that dangerous undercurrents form even close to the beach, and that fatal swimming accidents happen from time to time.

If a current pulls you out, the Bulgarian Red Cross Water Rescue Service advises you not to swim straight against it. Swim diagonally across it until you are free, then head back to shore. Stay calm, float if you get tired, and wave to the lifeguard. Its other rules: swim only in guarded areas, never swim far out alone, don’t rely on inflatables, and don’t go in after drinking alcohol.

When are lifeguards on duty?

Lifeguards work on the guarded beaches in summer only. Varna Municipality sets the dates each year, so look for the tower and a flag before you swim. Every year from May to September, RZI Varna takes water samples at 23 bathing zones on the coast. Early-morning, evening and off-season swims have no lifeguard, so swim near the shore and never alone. According to the Bulgarian Red Cross Water Rescue Service, 86 people drowned in Bulgaria in 2024 (BNT, 11 June 2025).

Are there jellyfish, and what do I do if I’m stung?

Two jellyfish species live in the Black Sea: the moon jellyfish (Aurelia) and the larger barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo). Citing the Institute of Oceanology, BNT reports that they are harmless to people without allergies and cause at most slight redness. Currents sometimes push large groups of them towards the shore. The Bulgarian Red Cross also warns about the greater weever and the stingray, which can injure you even on the sand. The NHS gives this first aid for stings: rinse with sea water (not fresh water), don’t touch the tentacles with bare hands, don’t put ice on it, and take a painkiller if needed. Call 112 if you have trouble breathing, swelling spreads or you feel faint.

Is the water clean?

From May to September, RZI Varna samples 23 bathing zones, from Panorama at Golden Sands to Byala, about every two weeks. It tests for E. coli and intestinal enterococci. In its yearly results PDF, each zone gets a table of sample dates. The EU limit for an “excellent” rating at sea is 250 E. coli and 100 enterococci per 100 ml, and most 2026 samples were far below that. Officers’ Beach is the long-standing exception, rated “satisfactory”. The RZI says no Varna bathing zone is unsafe.

Sun and heat

July and August sun is strong. Avoid lying out at midday, drink water, use sunscreen and keep an eye on children. The Red Cross advises waiting one to two hours after a meal before you swim.

Someone is in trouble: what now?

Shout for the lifeguard and call 112. Don’t swim out yourself unless you are trained. Throw something that floats instead. For beaches and water temperatures, see the Varna beaches guide and sea temperature by month.
