Running in Varna: the Sea Garden and the seafront

Varna's favourite running routes follow the Sea Garden alleys and the flat seafront promenade, including the 1.1 km Alley of Olympic Glory.

Published:

The classic Varna run is a loop through the Sea Garden and back along the seafront promenade below it: car-free, mostly flat, shaded by old trees and always with the sea in view. The Alley of Olympic Glory, near the Dolphinarium, is the park’s dedicated sports lane.

The Alley of Olympic Glory

Opened on 5 September 2013, the alley is 1,100 metres long and 5 metres wide. According to Visit Varna, it has new paving, lighting, benches and fitness equipment, plus ten information points about the achievements of Varna’s Olympic athletes – all with views over Varna Bay. It is a natural place for intervals, a cool-down or a quick strength session.

A simple loop for every level

Level Idea
Easy Walk–run between the main entrance and the Dolphinarium, then back along the alleys
Steady Add the Alley of Olympic Glory and return along the promenade by the beaches
Longer Follow the seafront promenade north beyond the park and turn around when you like

Use a running app to measure your own loop – paths cross and branch, so it is easy to adjust the distance.

When to run

  • Summer: early morning or after sunset. Average daytime highs in July and August are close to 29 °C.
  • Spring and autumn: any time of day; this is the best season for longer runs.
  • Winter: mild by European standards, but the seafront can be windy – a light windproof layer helps.

Etiquette and safety

  • Share the alleys with walkers, families and cyclists; keep right and pass gently.
  • Carry water in summer; there are cafés along the way.
  • After dark, stay on the lit main alleys and the promenade.

Make it a routine

Many locals finish their run with a swim at the Central Beach from June to September. Out of season, a stretch on the sand and a coffee on the way home does the job just as well.
