Varna in winter: what's open, what locals do and is it worth it

Varna stays open all winter: opera, theatre, museums and sea walks from November to March, while Golden Sands and most beach bars close. Highs about 7 °C.

Published:

Varna is a real city, not just a resort, so it stays open all winter: the opera, theatres, museums, cafés and restaurants work from November to March. What closes is the beach world – Golden Sands, most beach clubs and many seaside bars shut for the season. Expect cool, damp and often windy days around 6–8 °C, rare snow and noticeably lower prices. Is Varna worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want culture, long sea walks and a calm city at low cost. The State Opera’s season peaks in December with The Nutcracker and Christmas concerts, the museums are uncrowded, and you will have the Sea Garden almost to yourself. It is not the right trip if you want sunbathing, beach nightlife or a lively resort hotel.

What is the weather like in winter?

January is the coldest month, with average highs of 6.6 °C and lows just below zero. The sea drops to about 7–10 °C, and there are only 90–120 hours of sunshine a month. Snow falls in some winters but rarely lasts; it is the wind off the sea that makes it feel cold. See the full Varna weather by month table.

What is open and what is closed?

  • Open all year: shops and restaurants in the centre, the opera and theatres, the Festival and Congress Centre, the Aquarium, the Archaeological Museum (closed Sundays and Mondays in winter), the Sea Garden and the seafront promenade.
  • Reduced: the Stone Forest opens only on request in December and closes on Sundays and Mondays from January.
  • Closed: Aladzha Monastery from December to February, and most hotels, bars and beach clubs in Golden Sands and on Kraybrezhna.

What do locals do in winter?

They go to the theatre, meet friends in cafés and taverns, walk the dog by the sea on sunny weekends and keep an eye on the city’s events calendar. On 6 December Varna celebrates Nikulden, St Nicholas Day, with fish on the table, and lights its Christmas tree on Nezavisimost Square. On 31 December the same square hosts a five-hour New Year’s concert.

How to plan a winter day

  1. Sunny day: sunrise in the Sea Garden, a long promenade walk, lunch in the centre, then the Stone Forest by car in the afternoon (January–April, not Sunday or Monday).
  2. Rainy day: the Archaeological Museum in the morning, the Aquarium after lunch, an evening at the opera or the FCC.
  3. Cold weekend with friends: a spa afternoon in Sts Constantine and Helena, then a tavern dinner with live music. For more group ideas see things to do with friends, and for routes out of town, day trips by car.

Tip: check the Visit Varna events calendar and the theatres’ websites in the week you arrive; programmes are usually published only a month or two ahead.

  4. Varna Archaeological Museum

    Museum📍 Centre

Home of the Varna Necropolis gold, often called the oldest processed gold in the world. In recent winters it has opened 10:00–17:00 and closed on Sundays and Mondays, so plan it for a weekday.

  5. Varna Aquarium

    Aquarium📍 Sea Garden💶 €2 adults, €1 children 6–18

A small, old-school aquarium of Black Sea life in the Sea Garden. From October to May it opens daily 09:00–18:00 and adult tickets cost €2, an easy hour on a grey day.

  6. Sea Garden winter walk and sunrise

Best for: Early risers, photographers, dog walkers

  7. Kraybrezhna promenade off-season

Seafront promenade📍 Below the Sea Garden

In summer this is club row; in winter most beach clubs are shut and the promenade belongs to joggers, cyclists and anglers. Go on a sunny afternoon and bring a windproof layer.

Best for: Runners, quiet walks, cyclists

  8. Mehana dinner with live music

Traditional tavern📍 Centre and residential districts

Winter is when Bulgarian taverns (mehana) feel right: grilled meat, slow-cooked stews, rakia and, in many places, live folk music on weekend nights. Book a table for Friday or Saturday.

Best for: Groups of friends, visitors who want local food

  9. Nikulden and the Christmas tree lighting (6 Dec)

Holiday and festival📍 Centre, Nezavisimost Square

St Nicholas Day honours the patron saint of sailors and fishermen: families eat fish, often baked stuffed carp, and the maritime church of St Nicholas holds services. The same day the city lights its Christmas tree on Nezavisimost Square with a children's concert and a Christmas market.

Best for: Everyone, especially families with children

  10. New Year's Eve concert on Nezavisimost Square (31 Dec)

    Open-air concert📍 Centre, Nezavisimost Square

The municipality's "Together on New Year's Eve" concert runs for about five hours with Bulgarian and international pop, rock, hip-hop, dance and folk acts. Arrive early and dress for a cold night outdoors.

Best for: Friends, couples, visitors spending New Year in Varna

  11. Spa day in Sts Constantine and Helena

Thermal spa📍 Sts Constantine and Helena, north of the city

The resort just north of the city sits on mineral springs of 40–60 °C, and several hotel spas list thermal pools and treatments. Winter opening varies, so check with the spa before you go.

Best for: Couples, anyone who wants to warm up

  12. Stone Forest (Pobiti Kamani)

The natural stone columns west of Varna open January–April 10:00–18:00 (closed Sundays and Mondays) and only by prior request in December. Nearby Aladzha Monastery is closed from December to February, so skip it this season.

Best for: Drivers, photographers on a clear day
