What to do in Varna when it rains: 12 indoor ideas (2026)

Rainy day in Varna? Go for the Archaeological Museum's gold, the Aquarium (€2), the Naval Museum, a film at Kino Arena or Aquahouse's warm mineral pools.

Published:

The best things to do in Varna when it rains are the Archaeological Museum (the world’s oldest gold), the Aquarium (€2, open daily), the Naval Museum, the Retro Museum plus a film at Kino Arena in Grand Mall, and an afternoon in the warm mineral pools at Aquahouse. Most city museums are within a 15-minute walk of each other, but in winter many close on Sundays and Mondays, so check the day before you go.

What is open in Varna on a rainy day?

From October to April, Varna’s museums keep shorter winter hours, usually 10:00–17:00. The rule of thumb:

Day Good bets
Monday Aquarium, City Art Gallery, Ethnographic and Natural History museums, Retro Museum
Tuesday–Friday Everything on this page
Saturday Archaeological and Naval museums, Aquarium, gallery, Retro Museum, cinema
Sunday Aquarium, Retro Museum, cinema, Aquahouse

How do I plan a rainy day in Varna?

  • Morning in the centre: the Archaeological Museum, then a pot of tea at The Social Teahouse nearby.
  • Afternoon by the sea: the Aquarium and the Naval Museum sit side by side at the Sea Garden entrance – one ticket each, about two hours together.
  • Evening: a film, an opera or a musical, or dinner in the centre.

If it pours all day, take a taxi or bus to Grand Mall and stay under one roof: Retro Museum, lunch, cinema.

What about rainy days with kids?

The Aquarium and the Naval Museum are the easiest wins for small children: short, cheap and close together. For older kids, the gold in the Archaeological Museum and the old cars in the Retro Museum work well. Children under 7 enter most city museums free. Aquahouse sells a family ticket for two adults and two children.

Is the Planetarium open?

The Planetarium in the Sea Garden lists public shows on Thursdays in July and August (€3.58 adults). Outside summer, call ahead before you go. Source: Visit Varna.

Practical tips

  • Museum tickets are sold only at the ticket office; museums do not sell them online.
  • Bring a small umbrella rather than a big one: the seafront is windy in autumn.
  • Grand Mall and Aquahouse are a bus or taxi ride away; everything else is walkable from Nezavisimost Square.
