What to do in Varna today: ideas by time of day and weather

What to do in Varna today: sunrise by the sea, banitsa, museums from €2, the Sea Garden, opera or theatre tonight, and rainy-day backups.

Published: Last updated:

Today in Varna, start early by the sea: watch the sunrise from the Central Beach, have banitsa for breakfast and walk through the Sea Garden. Spend the middle of the day in a museum or the Roman Thermae, and in the evening catch a show at the Opera or Drama Theatre on Nezavisimost Square. If it rains, the Aquarium and the Retro Museum are open every day.

Use the “good right now” picker at the top of this page: it filters the ideas below by time of day and weather. Opening hours here are the cold-season hours (October–May) published by Visit Varna; check the link before you go, especially on Sundays and Mondays.

What can I do in Varna this morning?

Varna faces east, so the sun rises straight out of the sea. Go down to the beach below the Sea Garden, then warm up with banitsa and boza or coffee – see our banitsa guide and sunrise spots. Early morning is the best time for the Kolhozen market. On scheduled days (check the Visit Varna page for the current dates) the free Varna Highlights walk leaves the Tourist Information Centre at 10:30; no booking is needed and it runs in rain or shine.

What to do in the afternoon?

This is museum time. The Archaeological Museum, home of the world’s oldest worked gold, and the Roman Thermae are both in the centre and, from October to April, close at 17:00. The Aquarium in the Sea Garden is the cheapest ticket in town at €2. On a bright afternoon, walk the seaside promenade (Kraybrezhna) towards the north beaches instead. What’s on in Varna tonight?

Evening performances usually start at 19:00. The Festival and Congress Centre publishes one combined programme for its own halls, the Opera and the Drama Theatre, so one look tells you tonight’s opera, ballet, play or concert. For today’s weather, sea temperature and duty pharmacies, open our Today in Varna page; for concerts, festivals and shows in the coming days, see the Varna Now events calendar. After the show, pick a table from our best restaurants list.

What to do in Varna today if it rains?
