Walking, cycling and taxis: moving around Varna at a slow pace
Central Varna is compact enough to walk. For longer trips, combine walking with buses, a bike along the seafront or a licensed taxi with its tariff shown.
The calmest way to get around central Varna is on foot. The Cathedral, the main pedestrian street, the Sea Garden and the Central Beach are all close together. For longer distances, combine walking with the bus, ride a bike along the seafront, or take a licensed taxi.
Walking
Varna’s centre is flat near the sea and pleasant to explore slowly. A classic walk goes from the Cathedral along the pedestrian street towards the Sea Garden and down to the beach. Inside the park and on the pedestrian street there are no cars, so it is also a relaxed walk with children.
Cycling
According to Visit Varna, the Sea Garden’s wide alleys and the promenade along the beaches make it easy to reach the sea by bike. Outside the park, traffic can be busy, so plan routes on quieter streets and wear a helmet. In the park, ride slowly and give pedestrians priority.
Buses for longer trips
For the railway station, the airport, the bus station or the beaches north of the city, use the buses. Line 409 runs from the airport through the centre to the northern resorts, and the varnatraffic.com route planner shows live arrivals.
Taxis
Taxis are common in Varna. To travel calmly:
- Use a licensed taxi from a known company, or order one by phone or app.
- Look at the tariff sticker on the window before you get in.
- Make sure the meter is switched on.
- Ask for a receipt if you need one.
Driving and parking
Cars cannot enter the Sea Garden. If you drive to the Central Beach, Visit Varna suggests parking along Primorski Blvd and walking about ten minutes through the park.
