A perfect day in Varna, hour by hour

How to spend one unhurried day in Varna like a local: sunrise by the sea, banitsa breakfast, the market, a swim, the Sea Garden and a slow evening.

Published:

The perfect Varna day is a slow one: catch the sunrise over the sea, eat banitsa from a bakery, wander the market, swim at a city beach, rest in the shade of the Sea Garden and finish with fish and a walk along the seafront. Everything below is within walking distance of the centre.

06:30 – Sunrise by the water

Varna faces east, so the sun comes up straight out of the Black Sea. Walk down through the Sea Garden to the Central Beach, which lies just below the park’s main entrance, and watch the bay change colour. Early morning is when locals jog, swim and walk their dogs.

08:00 – Banitsa and coffee

Head back into town for breakfast at a neighbourhood bakery: a warm slice of banitsa (filo pastry with eggs and white cheese) with ayran or boza, then coffee on a café terrace.

09:30 – The market

Stroll to the Central outdoor market, which locals call Kolhozen pazar, for seasonal fruit, vegetables and cheese. Bring cash in euros and a tote bag.

11:00 – Swim (June to September)

Return to the beach. The Central Beach has fine sand and a shallow, flat seabed. In summer, choose a lifeguarded stretch and respect the flags.

13:30 – Lunch and a rest in the shade

Have a light lunch – a shopska salad, cold tarator soup, grilled Black Sea fish – then find a bench under the trees in the Sea Garden. The park has been growing since the 1860s and is home to the Aquarium, the Observatory and the Dolphinarium.

17:00 – Move a little

19:30 – Evening by the sea

Dinner near the beach, then the long promenade walk as the lights of the port come on. This is the hour when the whole city seems to slow down together.

Practical notes

  • Bus lines 17a, 20 and 39 stop at “Festivalen kompleks”, about ten minutes on foot from the Central Beach.
  • Buy bus tickets in the TTickets Varna app or at ticket machines, and validate on board.
  • Out of season, many beach bars close, but the promenade and the park stay open.

Is the Sea Garden free?

Yes, it is a public park open all day. Some attractions inside it charge for entry.
