Kolhozen pazar: shopping at Varna's central market

Varna's Central outdoor market, known locally as Kolhozen pazar, is the city's largest open-air market for fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat and fish.

Published:

Kolhozen pazar – officially the Central outdoor market – is where Varna buys its tomatoes, cheese and flowers. According to Visit Varna, it lies between Dr. Piskyuliev, Drin and Angel Kanchev streets and is the largest outdoor market in the city, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, as well as clothes, cosmetics, flowers and household goods.

Why go

The market is the easiest way to eat with the seasons in Varna. Summer brings piles of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, watermelons and peaches; autumn brings grapes, pumpkins and peppers for roasting; and all year round you will find white brined cheese (sirene), yellow cheese (kashkaval), eggs and honey.

A morning market routine

  1. Go early, ideally before 10:00, when produce is freshest.
  2. Walk the whole market once before buying anything.
  3. Ask to taste – many sellers will happily let you try a slice of fruit or cheese.
  4. Pay in cash; bring coins and small euro notes.
  5. Carry a tote bag and a small bag for soft fruit.

Tips for newcomers

  • A few Bulgarian words help: zdraveyte (hello), kolko struva? (how much is it?), blagodarya (thank you).
  • Remember that in Bulgaria a nod can mean “no” and a head shake can mean “yes” – when in doubt, use words.
  • Prices are shown in euros since Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026.
  • Parking next to the market is paid; on foot or by bus is easier.

Combine it with

A banitsa breakfast on the way in, and a slow walk down to the Sea Garden on the way out.
